The sedition trial against the US-based Gambian journalist, Fatou Jaw Manneh, is scheduled to resume at the High Court in Banjul today after its recent transfer there. The case had dragged for sometime at the Kanifing Magistrates Court before Magistrate Buba Jawo but was later moved to the Banjul Magistrates Court on the grounds that the former lacked the jurisdiction to hear the matter.
At the Banjul Magistrates Court however, the same issue of jurisdiction arose as Magistrate Mboto ruled that since the accused was arrested at the Banjul International Airport in Yundum, it is the Brikama Magistrates Court that has the jurisdiction to entertain the matter. Ever since that ruling by the Banjul Magistrates Court, the case did not proceed until its latest transfer to the High Court in Banjul. Meanwhile the case is expected to be mentioned today before Justice Yamoa of the Criminal Division.
