Tuesday, December 18, 2007

The Banjul Sports Committee has submitted a D5 million (five million Dalasi) project to GAMWORKS, awaiting approval, for the transformation of the Banjul Mini Stadium.

Ebou Faye, Secretary General of the Banjul Sports Committee, said the project will involve the building of pavilions with offices at Cotton Street and another pavilion at Blank Street with a multi purpose hall where both basketball and volleyball matches could be played.

He said the football pitch will be totally rehabilitated and standardised to ensure the reflection of its mini stadium status to meet both local and international standards.

“The sorry state of the football pitch is not worthy of the capital city, hence the need to embark on such a large scale development at the mini stadium. There is need for community participation in this drive to upgrade the mini stadium as any time the mini stadium is developed it cannot be sustained due to certain youths who trespasses there. We will work with the security forces to ensure 24 hour security and prosecute the trespassers,” he added

He pointed out that the Banjul Mini Stadium is the only worthy playing field in Banjul and its development will immensely contribute to the production of more quality players and vitalization of Banjul football. I

“The Banjul Sports Committee has raised a certain amount of the counterpart fund to be paid and will seek cooperation and assistance from other institutions and businesses to ensure fulfillment of the desired objective of having a standard mini stadium, which the City Boy’s deserve,” he explained.

He said it will also cater for the community with their programs for naming ceremonies, marriages.
