The Banjul branch of the Green Boys and Girls, a youth group of the ruling APRC, have sharply reacted to our yesterday’s front page story captioned: ‘Green Boys Coordinator jailed’.
The story was referring to three-month imprisonment of Howsson Cham by Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, after being found guilty of impersonation and obtaining money by false pretence. Mr. Cham was during the trial referred to as the Coordinator of the group.
In a swift rebuttal, Aji Yama Njie, the leader of Green Boys and Girls in Banjul, said Howsson Cham has never been the Coordinator of the group. “He was just using the title to engage in activities which are contrary to the ideals and principles of the youth group. We [the group] are here to rally behind President Jammeh and the APRC by engaging in activities that will uphold the good name of the President and the party but not the contrary. The Green Boys and Girls are decent people who always adhere to the ideals and principles of the APRC party,” she explained.
For his part, the deputy leader of the group in Banjul, Mafugi Minteh echoed Yama’s remarks and assured the general public that the Green Boys and Girls comprised people of unparallelled integrity. “We feel bad for our group’s name to be associated with such a wrongful act. We are clarifying for the purpose of clarity,” he concluded.
