EU on President Kufuor’s AU Chairmanship

The British High Commission in The Gambia, in its capacity as the Permanent acting Representative of the Presidency of the European Union (EU), has equally joined the list of Heads of State, governments, institutions and individuals in congratulating President John Kufuor of Ghana on his election as new Chairperson of the African Union (AU).

In a statement issued by the British High Commission in Banjul, the EU Presidency stated that in recent years, the African Union has become a major international player. “The contribution it makes to strengthening democracy and stability, especially to resolving conflicts are of great importance for the whole of the African continent. Its role in promoting regional integration and economic development in Africa is of equal significance,” he said.

The release added that “with the current crises in Somalia and Sudan this year, once again much is expected of the African Union and its Chairperson”.

The release, therefore, stated that the European Union emphasizes its willingness to work closely and constructively with the African Union and its new Chairperson in the spirit of partnership and mutual interest.
