Executive members of the Female Lawyers Association, The Gambia (FLAG), on Wednesday paid a courtesy call on Hon Fatoumatta Jahumpa-Ceesay, Speaker of the National Assembly at her office in Banjul.
Speaking to journalists shortly after audience with the Speaker, Ms Loubna Farage, Secretary-General and Chairperson of the Committee, said they work on individual basis as lawyers representing women and children.
She disclosed the visit was meant to brief the Speaker about the existence of their association and its official launch, scheduled for February 23rd, at the Coconut Residence, along Kombo Coastal Road.
Ms Farage said the briefing covered the Association’s efforts towards domestic violence, child abuse and exploitation, as well as measures to address certain issues affecting women and children. She commended The Gambia Government and NGOs for assisting Gambian women, adding that the association cannot achieve its aims and objectives without the support of its counterparts.
Mrs. Farage, told journalists that similar associations exist in other countries within the sub-region, such as Ghana and Nigeria.
Receiving the lawyers, Hon Fatoumatta Jahumpa-Ceesay, expressed delight at the courtesy call. The Speaker advised the female lawyers to reinforce efforts towards sensitizing women about their civic rights, especially on elections to public office.
Speaker Jahumpa-Ceesay then assured them of her full support and encouraged them to continue their good work.
Other members of the association’s delegation were Janet Sallah-Njie, President of FLAG, Mrs. Victoria Androus, Publications Committee member, Amie Joof-Conteh, Chairperson of Legal sub-Committee, Sainabou Wadda-Ceesay, Chairperson of Welfare Committee and Aminata Jawara, Social Secretary of FLAG.
