Local Organising Committee unveiled...as Gambia prepares to host the first-ever Zone II Volleyball..

A Local Organising Committee was on Wednesday, March 7, unveiled by Mr Sait Mbye, Director of Youth and Sports. The committee which is tasked with the responsibility of ensuring a successful hosting of the first-ever Zone II Volleyball Championship in Banjul is headed by Mr Abdoulie Kah, Assistant Director of Youths and Sports.
The sub-regional tournament will take place between March 25 and March 31, 2007 and will gather all the Zone II nations, including neighbouring Senegal, Mali, Mauritania, Guinea Bissau, Burkina Faso, among others.
In his launching remarks, Director Sait Mbye said the Confederation of African Volleyball Federation has for the first time selected The Gambia as the venue for the competition. He said the tournament will also serve as a qualifying bout for the All African Games, scheduled to be held in Algeria later this year. He said three nations out of the lots will qualify for Algeria games. Mbye urged the Local Organising Committee to be steadfast and ensure a good successful tournament.
Musa Kassa Taal, President of The Gambia Volleyball Association (GVBA) said the Gambian team will surely play for pride in a bid not only to retain the coveted title, but also to qualify for the All African Games.
Mr Donald Sock, Executive Secretary, National Sport Council said The Gambia has also been identified by the continental volleyball federation for the establishment of the Zone II Volleyball Secretariat. He said The Gambia government has already given the green light for the establishment of the secretariat, which will be another landmark in The Gambia’s sports development.
