The Gambia’s flag bearer in the CAF Confederation Cup Championship, Hawks United, was held to a goalless draw by Dolphin FC of Nigeria in their first-leg encounter played in Banjul on Saturday.
After a lackluster first interval display display, both Hawks and Dolphin put up a stunning performance in the second half that saw both sides squandered numerous scoring chances.
However, the host’s best chance came on 38th minute when Lamin Sarr’s low shot bounced off the woodwork. In the 57th minute, Robert Badjie was grateful for a timely coverage from his defender when he left his zone to block Dolphin’s attack.
In the final minutes of the game, the visitors made some neat passes in Hawks’ territory before the regulation period expired on a stalemate scoreline.
Hawks, which earlier drew goalless in their debut match in Banjul before eliminating Ivory Coast’s AS Deguele on away goal rule, still stand a bright chance of progressing to the next stage if they can work on their scoring ability in Nigeria when the two sides meet in fortnight time.
At the time of going press last evenings, The Gambia league holders, GPA FC, were locking horns with Nasarawa United of Nigeria in their Champions League first-leg tie in Lagos.
