Mrs Rohey Njie, the President of the Gambia Blood Donors Association (Gamblood), has called on Gambians, especially the women, to come out in full force to donate blood.
Mrs Njie made this statement recently in an exclusive interview with this reporter at her office in Banjul.
“Women are the highest receivers of blood, but some of them are in the habit of saying that they can’t give blood due to their monthly menstruation period,” she said, adding that they shouldn’t use that as an excuse because after their period of menstruation they could donate blood.
She noted: “Giving blood is very important and rewarding because if you give blood, you save a life. Every individual should be interested in giving out blood to a fellow human being if there is any possibility, because every healthy person can be ill at any time and may need blood. So it is very important to help others because any one can need help from another person. So if you save someone’s life, your life may be saved by someone else.”
Mrs Njie disclosed that she attained her position as president of Gamblood through her generosity of donating blood, adding that since she joined the organisation, she had been donating blood.
“Anybody who is interested in donating blood can go to the laboratory at the RVTH; the blood sample will be taken and when you are healthy to give out blood you will be contacted, and for the women, the person should have a blood level of 12.0,” she said.
Mrs Njie also urged women to come out and support her as a fellow woman who has been nominated as the president of Gamblood.
