Tuesday, April 24, 2007
Dawda Njie, Immigration Officer, and Leon Jammeh, Police Officer, were the last prosecution witnesses to testify in the trial of five Senegalese nationals who are currently standing trial for the offences of illegal entry into the country and possession of firearms without license.

Testifying first, Dawda Njie said that he is posted at the Seaport Immigration Post. He testified that his duty, amongst others, included attending to people coming in and out of The Gambia through the sea. He said anybody who entered The Gambia through the sea should report to the sea port immigration post for clearance. He said they attended the crew on board the vessel, adding that they also inspected the vessel and issued clearance after all the necessary documentation had been done in line with the procedures.

Njie further adduced that they also made entry of the vessel, the crew, the agent, the details of the vessel as well as passengers on board. He said that on 6th February 2007, he was at seaport Immigration post on duty but did not see the accused persons; neither did he record their names. He said on the day in question, he did not record any vessel coming from Senegal.

Also testifying, Sgt. 183 Leon Jammeh said he is in charge of gun license at the police headquarters in Banjul. He explained that he issues license for guns that were imported into the country, on the approval of the Inspector-General of Police. He adduced that anybody who imported firearms into the country is required to write to the IGP for approval, which is given after clearance is issued for it.

He further stated that on 6th February 2007 he was at police headquarters, but never attended to the accused persons. He said he did not know of any issuance of license to the accused persons.

The hearing, which was presided over by magistrate Harry Jammeh of the Kanifing Magistrates Court, took place on 18th April 2007.

The case was at length adjourned to 23rd April 2007 for defense to open their case.
