Contractor Testifies in William West’s Murder Case

Tuesday, May 29, 2007

A building contractor hired by the accused in the murder trial of a Briton, William West, to work on the deceased’s resident in Sanyang testified recently before Justice Yeboah at the Banjul High Court.

Musilieu Adjai, a Nigerian building contractor, in his evidence at the court, said he came to know Adora (friend of the accused) through his friend Ousman Sanneh and he also happened to know a lady he called Mamie through the accused, Kate Atori West.

According to Musilieu Adjai (PW5), Ousman Sanneh brought Kate and her Adora to him in June and introduced Kate as a potential client. Adjai said Kate then gave him a contract to renovate her house. He added that they agreed on a payment of D20,000 and decided to meet the following morning to visit the site.

Adjai explained: “Ousman Sanneh took me to Adora in Bakau and to Sanyang to see the house. Kate took me around the house and told me it was her husband who bought the house for her and that he (the husband) was in the UK. We met Gibril Wane, the watchman.

“Kate told me to carry on with the work fast and quite efficiently. After I have shown her the work plan, we went to Jimpex to buy some materials. The materials were transported the following day. On the 3rd June she told me she was going back to the UK. She took the jeep and a certain man drove the car to a place I do not know.

“On our way to Brikama, a man identified as her watchmen stopped the car. Kate asked me to loan her D1,200 to pay the man and that she would pay me later.

“Kate signed the contract for her job at the Senegambia junction. On 4th June I removed my tools from the house. I met the watchman and told him that his boss had asked me to pay him.”

Adjai said he bought an Africell scratch card of D90 and gave him D410.

“Kate called me with an international number, 123, asking if I had started the work. She called again and I told her that we were lack of stones and sand. The work came to alt and she had to pay me D5,000 balance,” Adjai said.

“On 19th July 2006, I went with a certain man who identified himself as Mr. Keita, a security personnel. I was taken to the Kairaba Station and put in the cell. They saw Adora, and Ousman Sanneh was said to have travelled and Kate had escaped.”

Adjai further adduced that they were taken to the Police Headquarters and he (Adjai) gave his statement.

“On the 21st July they said Kate’s husband had been killed,” he told the court.

The defence counsel, Lamin Camara, asked PW5, Adjai whether he gave his statement at the Police and Ajai said yes.

Cautioned that what he had said was contained in a statement and whether it was correct and if it was the truth, he also said yes.

The case was adjourned to 30 May 2007 for continuation.
