Gambian artist launches new book

Momodou Ceesay, a renowned Gambian artist on Thursday launched his book entitled “On my knees before the mighty heaven” at a ceremony held at the Atlantic hotel in Banjul.

Mrs. Beatric Allen, Director of Trade and Investment at the Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), who also doubles as the First Vice-President of The Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) and member of the International Olympic Committee, in her capacity as the chief launcher described the author Momodou Ceesay as a patriot, an artist and a poet.

She said the book is an expression of words and visual art, bounded by creativity in producing a powerful and moving story of an African man’s spiritual journey in life, leading to an audience with God.

Mrs. Allen said that the book is based on both the Holy Quran and the Bible and creates the basis for soul searching as a means of forging a better life for Africans and African Americans.
“The book also ended with a revelation of reasons for the suffering and what the future holds for Africa and the world as a whole” she said.
Nana Grey-Johnson, a prominent Gambian writer, said the publication of the book is yet another significant mile stone in the development, promotion and preservation of arts and culture as well as inculcating the spirit of writing culture in the country.

He hailed the efforts of the author, describing the publication as a wonderful and inspiring work that needs to be emulated by other artists and potential writers in the country.
Momodou Ceesay, the author, described the publication of the book as a vision that came to him, and gave him the historical background leading to the publication of the book.
Mr. Ceesay spoke at length on the need to have peace in Africa and the world at large.

For his part, Kaliba Senghore, Director General of The Gambia Tourism Authority (GTA) and Mrs. Adelle Sock, hailed the work of the author.
The Occasion was chaired by Marcel Thomasi, a renowned Gambian journalist.
