Friday, June 1, 2007

The Islamic Cultural Centre for Women and Children (ICCWC) on Sunday celebrated its 10th anniversary in a grand style.

The ICCWC, established in Banjul in 1997 by a dynamic Islamic scholar, Aja Maimuna Savage, is aimed at promoting the true culture and religion of Islam among women and children.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Executive Director of the ICCWC, Aja Maimuna Savage, said the centre started with 10 students and within 10 years more than 500 young women and children benefited from the centre through its training and programmes.

She therefore thanked all those who have helped in the development of the centre, while calling for more support and cooperation from the public.

Delivering the keynote address on the occasion, the President of the Supreme Islamic Council, Alh Banding Drammeh, said the proprietor of the school has plans to promote Islam through mainly children and women, who are rightly trained to become good Muslims.

“Gambians are always proud of western culture, and as Muslims we should have the Quran as our culture which will benefit us in the hereafter,” Alh Drammeh said.

The programme was graced by dignitaries from the Muslim Ummah, both from The Gambia and other parts of the world such as Senegal, Sierra Leone and Europe.
