Mrs. Fatoumatta Jahumpa-Ceesay, Speaker of the National Assembly of The Gambia, accompanied by Hon. Adama Cham, NAM for Kombo North and Lamin Ceesay, NAM for Sami constituencies, respectively, returned to Banjul, after a five-day working visit to the Libyan Arab Jamahirriya.
The delegation which arrived in Tripoli, the Libyan capital, on June 18th, 2007, were received on arrival by Dr Hussni Alwahishe, Secretary of Legal Affairs and Human Right of the General Peoples’ Congress.
Dr Alwahishe, who received the delegation, said The Gambia and Libya have a very close relationship that binds the two countries. He then noted that it’s because of this, that many a Libyans are investing in The Gambia.
He further expressed Libya’s appreciation to The Gambia’s cooperation during the period it was under sanctions.
For her part, Mrs. Fatoumatta Jahumpa-Ceesay, Speaker of the National Assembly of The Gambia, said The Gambia has always stood by Libya. This, she said, is a demonstration of President Jammeh’s solidarity with the Libyan government.
She added that “if today anybody should be closed to Libya, it should be The Gambia”, describing President Yahya Jammeh, the Gambian leader as a patriot who loves Africa and the rest of humanity.
Speaker Jahumpa-Ceesay then assured that, there is nothing that should separate The Gambia-Libya ties, and then emphasised that President Jammeh, the Gambian leader, shares the same ideas of Pan- Africanism with Colonel Muamar Ghadaffi, the Libyan Leader.
It could be recalled that President Yahya Jammeh, was the first African Head of State to visit Libya during the period it was under embargo.
Before leaving for Banjul, Speaker Jahumpa-Ceesay and the delegation were hosted to a working lunch at the Peoples’ Congress Bureau of the Libyan Arab Jamahirrya by Mr. Ibrahim Ebjad, Secretary of Peoples’ Committee.
During the lunch, discussions were centred on bilateral issues; and the two parties agreed on an exchange programme between the National Assembly of The Gambia and the Peoples’ Congress of the Libyan Arab Jamahirrya, as well as to set up a Parliamentary Friendship Committee in both countries.
Speaker Jahumpa-Ceesay was later received by Colonel Muamar Ghaddafi, the Libyan leader.
