22 officers of the Gambia Police Force (GPF) were recently elevated to various ranks ranging from Assistant Superintendent of Police to Commissioner of Police.

In his remarks at a ceremony organized to decorate the promoted officers at the Police Headquarters in Banjul, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Benedict Jammeh, commended the officers for what he called their hard work, commitment and dedication to duty.

According to IGP Jammeh, the 22 were elevated by dint of selfless service to the country as well as their institution. To Mr. Jammeh, promotion entails assumption of new roles and responsibilities and therefore, urged the elevated officers to endeavour to strive harder so as to be able to rise up to the occasion.

He elucidated that henceforth, promotion in the police would be purely based on merit and not otherwise.
Also speaking at the ceremony was the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), Lang Tombong Tamba, who maintained that promotion in the security forces is a tradition and that it’s aimed at spurring officers to strive towards excellent service delivery.

CDS Tamba enjoined members of the security services to build and foster a cordial working-relationship between themselves and the civilian population.
“No security agency is superior to the other and the civilian population is an indispensable partner in national development,” he added.

Meanwhile during the ceremony, 13 officers were promoted to the rank of ASP, six to Superintendent, one to Chief Superintendent, one to deputy Commissioner of Police and one to Commissioner of Police.
