RVTH Staff, Two Others in Court on Abortion Charges

Dam Jeng, RVTH staff, as well as Mariam Tirera and Sidat Bangura, first and third accused persons respectively, have been dragged to court for allegedly attempting to abort a two-month pregnancy. 

They appeared on 20 August 2007 before Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court.

The first and third accused pleaded not guilty, while the second accused, the RVTH staff, pleaded guilty.

Dam Jeng, who has worked at RVTH for twenty-three years, told the court the third accused had paid him the sum of one thousand, three hundred dalasis to carry out an abortion on the first accused, which he did.

Magistrate Jammeh granted the first accused bail in the sum of five thousand dalasis, but remanded the third accused and the second accused in custody.
