The Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (SIC) has reported that it has completed consultation with its regional representatives, Muslim religious leaders and the Imam Ratib of Banjul about the sighting of the moon Muharam as a herald of the Muslim new year.
The council therefore would want to inform the Muslim community that Yaumul Ashura commonly known as Tamxarit, shall be celebrated nationwide on Friday the 18th of January 2008.
By the same token yesterday, 10th January, has been agreed to be the first day of Muharam, according to a press release from the council. SIC further called on all Muslims to observe the practice of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), one of which is to fast the 9th and 10th day of the month.
The council finally prayed for Almighty Allah’s continued guidance for the people of The Gambia and the world at large, offering further prayer for stability, prosperity and development.
