Bailed Carnegie MD to Appear in Court Today

Mr. Charles Northfield, the Managing Director of Carnegie Minerals, has been released on bail The Point can reveal. Mr. Northfield was released on bail of 9 million Dalasis. It is understood that D5 million was asked in cash along with two properties worth D2 million each in the Greater Banjul area. The British national is presently being cared for by friends and will appear in court later today.

It will be recalled that recently the State formally pressed charges against Mr. Charles Northfield, the Managing Director of Carnegie Minerals and the Australian Mining Company itself.

The Accused last week appeared before Justice Na Ceesay Sallah-Wadda of the Banjul High Court, charged with three counts of economic crime and four counts of theft. The offences are alleged to have happened between 2006 and 2007 in diverse places in the Republic of The Gambia, causing economic loss to the Republic of The Gambia.

Carnegie Minerals Gambia Limited had its licence revoked by the Gambian government earlier this month following its failure to meet demands to shed more light on its activities. The revocation was followed by a press conference on the circumstances surrounding the whole saga.
