Lt. Camara, Boto Construction Proprietor Re-arrested

Wednesday, February 27, 2008

Lt. Bakary Camara and Momodou Lamin Sonko, alias Boto, are reported to have been re-arrested by security operatives. The duo is reported to have been in detention for about a week. Both Lt. Bakary Camara, bodyguard to the President, and Momodou Lamin Sonko, proprietor of Boto Construction company, are currently standing trial at the Banjul Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a motor vehicle with registration no. BJL 4063 B being the property of the Gambia government and thereby causing economic loss to the republic of The Gambia. Messrs Camara and Sonko were earlier on granted bail bond of D1 million each by the High Court following their Lawyer’s application.

Meanwhile Lawyer Antouman Gaye has filed a bail application on behalf of Momodou Lamin Sonko before Justice Na Ceesay Salla-Wadda, requesting bail to be granted to his client.

The Director of Public Prosecution, Emmanuel Fegbenle, acknowledged that he had been served with the motion and that they would not oppose the application. He said the applicant was obliged to furnish the court with information on the materials they are to produce in court with regard to the economic crime, noting that there was a pending application concerning the applicant, that had already been granted by the Chief Justice.

The DPP further stated that in order to facilitate dispensation of justice, he wished to apply for an adjournment to enable him furnish all the materials relevant to the case.

For his part Lawyer Antouman Gaye, counsel for the applicant, said the option of the state is to have the matter adjourned so that they could put all relevant materials before the court to enable the court to dispense substantive justice. He said he would like the state to provide the defence with the documents so that the defence could react to it.

The case has been adjourned to 28th February 2008 for continuation.

Meanwhile our sources have further disclosed that Mr Mustapha Leigh, former Director of Technical Services at the Department of State for Works, Construction and Infrastructure, has also been arrested, though the reason(s) for his arrest are not clear.
