Supt Manlafi Sanyang, a former head of Vehicles and Logistics Unit at the State House, yesterday, appeared before senior magistrate Kayode Olajubatu of Banjul Magistrates Court, to answer to alleged theft charges preferred against him by the state.

Mr Sanyang, who was acquitted and discharged on Tuesday in a separate trial involving a government vehicle, is facing two charges of theft and abuse of office, which contravene the Criminal Code Cap 10 Vol. III, Laws of The Gambia.

Yesterday’s sitting was characterised by the continuation of the testimony by the fourth prosecution witness, detective Bakary Bojang, who was also cross examined by the defence counsel Lamin Camara.

Continuing his testimony, the police detective informed the court that he obtained a cautionary statement from the accused person, who according to him, confessed that Abdoulie Kujabi gave him clearance to sell the vehicle in question.

Responding to questions during cross-examnination by defence counsel, Detective Bojang maintained that the vehicle (BJL 4591A) was the property of the Gambia Immigration Department, which was later given to the defunct Youth Action Group and later to the defunct Youth Development Enterprise, where it was registered as BJL 4591B.

According to the police detective, the theft was committed during the tenure of the former director general (DG) of National Intelligent Agency (NIA), Daba Marenah.

As the marathon cross examnination heats up, argument as to how one vehicle got three number plates sprung up. The prosecution witness told the court that the theft occurred, after the vehicle was moved from the Immigration Department to the Youth Action Group and the Youth Development Enterprise respectively.

At that juncture, defence counsel Lamin Camara, renewed his application for the review of bail conditions for his client; the would be delivered on it on the next adjourned date of June 16.
