Jole Rider Foundation (JRF), a charitable organisation based in the United Kingdom (UK), in collaboration with its board in The Gambia, last Thursday, donated 300 bicycles, worth D600, 000 to students of Dasilameh Upper Basic School, in Kombo Central District, Mayork Upper Basic School in Foni Bondali District and Bansang Upper Basic School in Central River Region, at a ceremony held in Gunjur Co-operative Secko.

David Susettenam, the Director of JRF said the idea of the foundation to donate bicycles to schools in the Gambia was conceived three years ago.

He added that, the first consignments came in 2004. “This was followed by another consignment, and this is the third consignment that they have donated. In each consignment, we delivered 300 bicycles to three different schools. As of now, nine schools have already benefited from JRF”.

Mr. Swettenham said, the organisation is a comprised individuals, companies and prison services in the UK who refurbished the bicycles.

He further said that JFR has a large quantity of bicycles that will be brought to The Gambia for schools. He noted that JRF doesn’t stop at donating bicycles, but also provides a bike refurbishment station. “JRF will provide training on bike refurbishment to eight students and teachers, of the various beneficiary schools,” he added.

Sainabou Faal, Deputy Governor Western Region, commended the donors for their timely gesture, adding that it complements the Government’s efforts in education.

Other speakers at the occasion included, Ebrima Badjie, who represented the Regional Director, Region II, and Councilor Hamad Sowe of Brikama Area Council.
