Capt Yaya Darboe Continues Testimony

Monday, October 23, 2006
Capt. Yaya Darboe, one of the alleged coup plotters, yesterday continued his testimony at the court martial in Yundum Barracks.

Continuing his testimony, Capt. Yaya Darboe told the court that he was severely tortured at the NIA office on the 21st March 2006, before making his statement on the 23rd March 2006.

He testified that he was pushed to make his statement in accordance with what Capt. Seckan and Capt. Bunja said against him. He told the court that he was asked if he had met his friend, Capt. Wassa Camara, and 2nd Lt Pharing Sanyang and whether he observed anything from them.

Capt. Darboe added that the so-called Hell Manager told him that if his statement deviated, they would have a session with him, like they had with Capt. Wassa Camara and 2nd Lt Pharing Sanyang. He said in the morning of the 23rd March 2006, at around 10a.m, he was taken to the NIA again and questioned by members of the panel. He added that during the interrogation at the NIA, he was shown a bunch of papers that the panel members claimed were pieces of correspondences between him and the then CDS, Col. Ndure Cham, Capt. Bunja Darboe and Capt. Seckan, adding that the panel members explained that they had been monitoring his communication for some time.

Capt. Yaya Darboe further stated that he was promised to be used as a state witness if he told the truth, thus he started to make his statement. He said he denied the panel’s contention that he came all the way from Farefenni for the coup.

He said at the time of writing his own statement there was no independent witness, adding that on the 26 March 2006 he appeared on GRTS.

Hearing continues tomorrow, 21st October 2006.
