In an effort to contribute to the sensitisation drive on Information Technology in The Gambia, Jollof Tutors recently organised a classical debate for senior secondary schools held at the Brikama Upper Basic School.
Delivering a brief introductory speech on the occasion, Modou Njie, a student at Nusrat Senior Secondary School and President of Jollof Tutors Schools Network, said: “The idea of establishing IT in schools [in Brikama] came as a result of the request made by some patriotic young people. The youth of Brikama will be provided with accessibility to Information Technology as soon as possible.”
According to Nkea A. Emmanuel, an administrator at Jollof Tutors, the idea behind the debate is to ensure that everybody in The Gambia becomes a computer literate.
Mr Emmanuel further said Brikama was disconnected due to mobility cost. “We are going to make Information Technology accessible and affordable for all in Brikama,” he said.
The topic of the debate was: Information Technology (IT) should be a Course Subject in Schools.
Four schools - Brikama Methodist Senior Secondary School, Nusrat Senior Secondary School, SOS Heman Gmeiner Senior Secondary School and Gambia Senior Secondary School - were expected to take part in the debate.
But SOS Heman Gmeiner and Gambia Senior Secondary Schools were absent, limiting the qualitative output of the contest.
Amadou Gitteh and Baboucarr Fatty from Nusrat spoke for the motion and Patient Forster and Isatou F. Jammeh from Brikama Methodist spoke against the motion.
Mr Sanusi Touray, vice principal of Jollof Tutors, and Mamudou Drammeh, moderator of the debate, also delivered speeches.
