A new 6.5 mega watt generator for Brikama power station was on recently commissioned to start operation with immediate effect. It is the fourth generator to be installed at the Brikama power station.
In an interview with the Daily Observer yesterday, Issam Bazzi, a representative of the Global Electrical Group (GEG), said the capacity of the Brikama power station is 25.2 mega watts. “At the moment we are using 22 mega watts, with a reserve of 3.2 mega watts.” He said the coming of the fourth generator completes the second phase of 25 MW, total capacity of the station.
According to him, (GEG) supplies power to the Kotu power station as they are the body responsible for distributing electricity. “We have a standby engine in case of any problem. Also, we do regular maintenance as per manufacturer’s recommendations”, he explained.
Alain Moreau, Station Manager at the Brikama Power Plant for his part said, (GEG) is an independent power provider to Nawec and with the commissioning of the fourth generator, “we will be able to provide the full capacity to help Nawec to provide stable power supply in the greater Banjul area 24 hours. In a nutshell, we produce energy and sell it to Nawec”.
The Brikama Power Plant project inaugurated in July 2006 is a fulfulment of President Jammeh’s desire to provide reliable and efficient power supply to the entire country.
The station served the strategic objective of enhancing security of supply and the electfification of the coastal areas which have high tourism and fisheries potentials.
It is the first truly Independent Power Producer (IPP) project undertaken by a private company, Global Electrical Group (GEG).
