Lamin Jammeh, who was found in possession of over four kilos of dope in North Bank Region for the purpose of trafficking, was last week given a heavy sentence by a magistrates’ court in Western Region.

The Brikama Magistrates’ Court, chaired by magistrate Edrisa Mbai, last Friday convicted and sentenced Jammeh to pay a fine of D1million in default to go to jail for five years. He would also spend another ten years in jail and both sentences are to run concurrently.

According to the facts of the matter as narrated before the court, Jammeh was, on or about 10 July 2006, found in possession of 4kg and 90g of cannabis sativa in Farafenni town, North Bank Region of The Gambia.

In his plea for mitigation, Lamin begged the court to temper justice with mercy, as in his words, he got two wives with 15 children, three of whom are now grade nine students.

Abdoulie Ceesay represented the National Drug Enforcement Agency in the trial.
