Being the major source of national athletes in the country in different sporting disciplines, school sports especially athletics which is the most popular in schools, has continued to gain momentum over the years.
Around this time every year, schools organize inter-house championships to identify athletes that will represent them in the national inter-schools competition. The competition features Senior and Junior Secondary Schools in the country in both field and track events.
As part of preparations for the 2008 Gambia Inter Schools Athletics Championship, the Western Region will stage its Inter-schools Athletics Championship heats on February 16, 2008 at the Kinderdoff Bothrop Senior Secondary School football pitch.
Babun Fatty, Secretary General of the Western Region Athletics Committee who spoke to Pointsports said the heats are organized to select good athletes that would represent the region in the forthcoming Gambia inter-schools Athletics Championship.
He expressed optimism that the championship heats would be free and fair.
He called for discipline and tolerance during the heats, and urged all participating schools in the region to come on the pitch on time as the event will kick off at 3.pm.
