Babylon attack case adjourned again

Thursday, August 14, 2008
The April 11th 2008 Babylon attack by angry natives of Makumbaya Village, Kombo North, could not proceed before Magistrate EF M’Bai of the Brikama Magistrates court, last Tuesday, because of new developments.

When the case was called last Tuesday, Buba Bojang and NB Jones Nebo, who represent the state in the trial, informed the court that the prosecution had decided to revisit the charges, which they said would enable them to free some of the accused and continue the trials with new charges. The prosecution told the court that this was still not possible due to some reasons. They therefore submitted an application for the court to give them more time for them to get adequately prepared for the trial.

Senior Magistrate M’Bai then granted the application and adjourned the case to Tuesday 19 August, for the continuation of the proceedings. The defence counsel for the accused persons, Lawyer Antouman Gaye, was absent.

Ninety-four accused persons are currently under trial for their involvement in the incident, with five multiple charges; including wilful damage to properties during their protest in the process of reclaiming what they said was their land from Lamin Jarju of Babylon.
