Magistrate to compensate litigant

Monday, September 8, 2008
Magistrate Njie of the Brikama Magistrates Court is to pay a compensation of D1,000 to one Assey Chorr of Gunjur Village.

This  development followed a judgment made by the same magistrate on an assault case involving one Naya Joof of Gunjur, who attacked the complainant, Assey with a knife.

After the magistrate had convicted the accused, he had ordered her to pay a compensation of D1,000 to the complainant, but the complainant had replied that the amount was too small as she had spent D3,000 on medication.

At that juncture, Magistrate Njie said the accused would pay D2,000 and he (the magistrate) would pay the remaining D1,000.

Meanwhile, at the same court, Habibou Ndong, Ebrima Ndong and Ebrima Cham were all  sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour for shopbreaking and theft by Magistrate Njie.
