Democracy blind folded in Africa

Thursday, January 31, 2008

The political stalemate in Kenya today is a very clear indication that democracy is really been blind folded in Africa . This is a big shame on Africa , in this day and age of the much talk about democracy in the world. No body with a sound mind and brain would have just suppressed the voices of the people like how it is done in Kenya today.
It should be clear to President Mwai kibaki that Kenya and its people do not belong to him or his party. It is the view of the Kenyans that he go and Odinga take over the affairs of the state. Kenyans have not only demonstrated their will at polls but on the streets of Mombassa, Nairobi and other big cities around Kenya .
Can’t it sound to Mwai Kibaki that the thousands of Kenyans who are dying for the interest of democracy would have contributed well towards the development of Kenya ? Why can’t it mean something to kibaki that, blood shed is not in the interest of Kenya ? Kibaki must not be normal to allow these subjects die in their thousands, became he refuse to accept the fact of the results of the December elections.
Why would he allow an elected opposition Member of Parliament be shot and killed? If his government cannot get anybody or group responsible then common sense dictates that his own people are responsible of the killing. African Union must assert their duties and responsibilities to ensure peace prevail in Kenya but it looks like, they have already fail with the brief visit by President kuffur tells that AU is a toothless bull. If AU will not be seen just like OAU-during whose time there were more coups and conflicts on the continent of Africa without them making any head way or success them they should act now ands positively.
African presidents must stop being dictatorial. It’s though time that they accept the result of elections, if one will not accept the results of those elections why then hold them at the expense of the tax payers. How much money did it take to conduct elections? Monies from the coffers of the state: Presidents that hold elections and yet refuse to accept the results should be charged with economic crimes –for depriving the nation, of millions in terms of human resources and monetary terms.
It is a pity that the last bastions of hope on the continent are going down the drain. Kenya is one of these states where we have seen several democratic elections. A country that is among the few where there has been no coups. The common ways of a change of government is by ballot; however one cannot guarantee that, there cannot be a coup in the face of the troubles these days in Kenya .
Another bastion of hope on the continent is South Africa . However the politics in South Africa today is like heading towards trouble waters. Jacobs Zuma is people‘s choice but the ANC government is not in favor of his presidency. We have seen in December 2007, when he was popularly elected as the President of the ANC party. That signals that he is to be the next presidential candidate of ANC. This means he is all poised to become the next President of South Africa. That effort is being under mind by the current government.
Zuma was the deputy president and we all saw how he was booted out of that position sometimes ago. These are no good signal for the survival of democracy on the continent of Africa . If in any case something happened to him, a thing like Kenya will be replicated in South Africa . In that case it will be more serious than Kenya . Knowing where South Africa is coming from.
African leaders should stand up and speak the truth even if the truth is affecting themselves or their favorites. Each President should know that the states do not belong to them. The results of elections should be respected if they want peace in the countries they govern. We should see an end to dictatorship by all means if not what we will be seeing is a blind fold of democracy in Africa .
