The body of a young man was yesterday discovered hanging on a telephone wire in his room in Jammeh Kunda, Gunjur. The body was said to be decomposing when it was discovered as repulsive stench was already wafting from it.
36-year-old Yankuba Bojang, a native of Gunjur married with two kids is believed to have committed suicide. The deceased is said to be a staff of NARI who always spent weekends with his family. There is no clue as to what might have driven Mr. Bojang to commit suicide but according to Lamin Fofana, a security guard and friend of Yankuba, Yankuba Bojang had once said that he would one day commit suicide. He said Yankuba refused to tell him why but described him as friendly and quiet.
Momodou Lamin Jammeh, Yankuba’s land lord, said: “Yankuba was a quiet man. He went to his village, Gunjur on weekends. He was taking care of my compound. I just do not know why he killed himself as a young man.”
What baffled most onlookers was that Pomri J. Ellis and wife, Dr. Jonsyn-Ellis, occupants of a house close to Yankuba’s, did not detect anything until the stench led neighbours to discover the suicide three days after it was believed to have been committed.
Commissioner Gibba of Gunjur Police intimated that every body should be the others keeper, adding that people should be alert to the coming and going of their neighbours in a spirit of good neighborliness.
He urged the people of the Gunjur community to be vigilant and report any strange happenings.
Up to the time of going to press, the deceased’s family was said to be unaware of the sad incident.
