DVD discs on the democratisation of the electoral process in The Gambia, prepared by Neneh Macdouall-Gaye, Secretary of State for Communications and Information Technology, during her active engagement as an anchor at the GRTS, were yesterday presented to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
The presentation of the discs comes a few months away to the Local Government elections, slated for January 24, next year. The documentary presents the transparent and democratic nature of The Gambia’s electoral process, which has been attracting interest from other countries.
Baba Mustapha Marong, Permanent Secretary at the Department of State for Communications and Information Technology, presented the package to Sera Grey-Johnson, IEC Commissioner, who oversees the communication division, on behalf of SoS Macdouall-Gaye. The presentation took place at the IEC Headquarters on Kairaba Avenue.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr Marong lauded the electoral process of The Gambia, describing it as “enviable and worthy of emulation”. However, he stressed that there is no room for complacency.
He observed that democracy and governance are “well-rooted” in The Gambia, noting that this has attracted people from outside to emulate these best practices.
For her part, Commissioner Grey-Johnson welcomed the gesture as noble, saying that the GRTS is one of their main partners that have a role to play in civil education. She affirmed the importance of the discs to the IEC’s archive. “It is a material for posterity, which can be beneficial to generations unborn”, she said.
“Election is a process and there is a lot to it,” she added, thanking the Communications and Information Technology Secretary of State for the gesture. She then assured that the IEC will make good use of the materias.
Robert Anthony Secka, Director of Administration at the IEC, gave the vote of thanks. Senior officials at the Department of State for Communications and Information Technology, GRTS, and IEC, witnessed the presentation ceremony.
