The venerable Imam of Kanifing Estate mosque, Imam Baba Leigh, reiterated the importance of Eid-al-fitr, commonly known as Koriteh, to worshippers during a sermon he delivered at the prayer grounds on Saturday.
Imam Leigh called for unity among all Muslims around the world as it is prescribed in the holy book. He laid special emphasis on the need for Muslims in The Gambia to strive for unity.
Imam Leigh told the congregation that the present unenviable position of The Gambia is largely blamable on Gambians themselves as they have tended to entertain petty jealousies and reporting each other to the authorities to the extent that no Gambian now feels comfortable in his or her working place or even in his own bedroom due to what he called jealousy and witch hunting. He however said that authorities should develop the habit of checking the veracity of any piece of information before taking action on such. He warned that unless this is done, innocent and dignified citizens will continue to be humiliated without any acceptable reason.
Imam Leigh cited the recent order for all Gambians in possession of Diplomatic and Service passports to hand over the documents to the IGP as ill advised because the decision was caused by some misinformation, saying that the documents are essential in facilitating travel for officials who are ipso facto highly qualified to have them.
In conclusion, he prayed for the nation and advised the congregation to love each other and refuse to be fragmented into sects.
