Modou Sanneh, a porter at Serrekunda “Sandika”, was yesterday convicted and sentenced to four months mandatory jail term with hard labour by Magistrate Pa Harry of the Kanifing Magistrates’ court.
Modou Sanneh was charged with threatening one Absa Cham, a barkeeper at Dippa Kunda with a knife on the 24th April, 2007.
When the charge sheet was read to him, he pleaded guilty and begged the court for mercy.
He told the court that he was just cracking jokes with her (Absa Cham). He further told the court that the rains are coming and he plans to go and help his people on the farm. “My mother is dead and I am the bread winner of the family,” he added.
But in handing down the sentence, the presiding magistrate, Pa Harry Jammeh told the accused that what he did was wrong. “Once you use the knife, there is the intention that something may happen. And this may result to a blood bath,” he said. He therefore convicted and sentenced the accused (Modou Sanneh) to four months mandatory jail term with had labour.
First class 2036 Camara represented the IGP in the trial.
