Thursday, July 5, 2007

Bajito Onda Africa Foundation The Gambia yesterday trained at least 70 law enforcement agents in the country at a ceremony held at the Father Farrel Memorial Hall in Kanifing.

Speaking at the opening, Mr. Amidu S Mansary, Global Director of Bajito Onda Africa, said his organisation is a charitable, human rights, non-profit making and non-governmental organisation, which strives to empower youths, women and children. He revealed that law enforcement officers face a variety of problems and threats ranging from the understanding of human rights education and the understanding of valuable Human Rights.

“To continue the minimization of human right violation, our organisation considers the project to a second level which is to target security officers involved in the law enforcement sections”, he said.

For his part, the Inspector General of Police, Benedict Jammeh described the training as as a good initiative to get the involvement of security personnel in human rights education.

“It is imperative as security officers that regardless of the outfit we belong to, to understand the basic principles of performing our duties with human rights as the basis of our actions”.

Dr Henry Carrol, Solicitor General and Legal Secretary, who declared the training open, said that in The Gambia as in several other African states, some law enforcement officers do not have any idea about the provisions of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Mr. U Sowe, Deputy Director of Social Welfare also spoke at the ceremony which was chaired by Ndey Mariama.
