Businessman gets 4-year sentence

Ebrima Mbenga, a businessman in Serrekunda, was convicted and sentenced, last Monday, to a fine of D6,000 or in default to serve four years imprisonment.

This was after he was found guilty of various traffic offenses by Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court.

When the charges were read to him, he pleaded guilty and begged the court to temper mercy with justice on him.  “I apologize for breaking the law,” he told the court.

However, Magistrate Jammeh finally convicted and sentenced Ebrima Mbenga to a fine of D6,000 in default to serve four years imprisonment.

According to the facts put before the court, the accused Ebrima Mbenga on or about the 20th June, 2007 permitted the use of his vehicle, which was unlicensed and uninsured, by Salifu Colley.

Concerning Salifu Colley, was caught while driving the said vehicle, he was also charged with five traffic offenses. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.  He was granted bail to the sum of D5,000 by the presiding Magistrate.

The case continues on the 12 July, 2007. Corporal 265 Trawally represented the IGP in the trial.
