Thursday, August 2, 2007

The Kanifing Magistrates’ Court presided over by Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh yesterday moved to the scene of the crime at Old Jeshwang where the accused Tabara Samba is alleged to have poured hot oil on her late husband, Ebrima Nyan.

This act precipitated the bringing of criminal charges against the Accused.

The defence counsels representing Tabara Samba, namely Mrs. Amie Joof-Conteh and her colleague Ms Farage applied for the court to grant them the opportunity to visit the scene of the crime to help them ascertain the credibility or otherwise, of the evidences adduced by Omar Jarju, prosecution witness.

Before the visit to the scene, Inspector Mary Sowe, a detective Police officer stationed at Kanifing Police was cross examined by defence counsel Mrs. Amie Joof Conteh. According to Inspector Sowe, after the arrest of the accused by the Kanifing Police, she mounted an investigation to draw up facts in connection with the alleged crime with detective corporal Saidykhan and the deceased’s brother, Lamin Conteh. She went on to say that the mattress in the house of the deceased was found wet and the bed frame stained with oil. Inspector Mary Sowe further elucidated that she further headed to the bathroom and the kitchen of the house where they found a frying pan containing burnt oil on a gas –tank.

Inspector Sowe adduced her visit to the Accused’s house was purely based on investigation and not to seek evidences against the accused. The investigation has not been mounted on anyone’s instructions, but as part of her official functions, Inspector Sowe added.

Hearing continues today, 1st August 2007
