Red Cross Bantaba kicks-off

The 6th International Youth Camp “Bantaba” of the Gambia Red Cross Society, kicked-off on Saturday at the Senegalese High School in Kanifing.

In his opening remarks, Alieu Momar Njie, acting Mayor of KMC, said it has come to be the core business of the government of the day to prevent and alleviate human sufferings of its citizenry.

According to Mayor Njie, ensuring the availability of the required resources and improving the situation of the most vulnerable, through the power of humanity is the mission of The Gambia Red Cross Society.

He described this bantaba as in line with the drive to achieve the MDGs, Vision 2020, and other national and international development goals.

Deputising for the Vice-President, Hon Sheikh Omar Faye, Secretary of State for Youth, Sports and Religious Affairs, advised the youths to work hard to become responsible people in the future. He assured them of his office’s support at all times.

SoS Faye also commended the Afromanding Musical Band of the Red Cross Society and further promised to support them at anytime the need arises.

Alasan Senghore, representative of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Cresent responsible for West and Central Africa, said the bantaba has an international scope and recognition. He advised the youths to keep up the good move and work hard for the socio- economic development of the country.

Other speakers at the ceremony included, Abdoulie Faye, National Youth Director of the Gambia Red Cross and Dr Saihou Sabally, President of The Gambia Red Cross, who assured them of his office’s  support.

Lamin Dibba, Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, delivered the vote of thanks.

The youth bantaba brought together over 500 participants and is expected to end on 26 August, 2007.
