Kanifing Estate ‘robbers’charged

Seedy Jallow and Lamin Saine were, on Tuesday, paraded before Senior Magistrate Abdoulie A Mbacke of the Kanifing Magistrates Court, charged with robbery under Section 272 of the Criminal Code and punishable under Section 273 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

In his evidence-in-chief, Lamin Danso, a police detective attached he was on duty as officer commanding and overseeing five police stations in the Kanifing Division. He said while on night patrol with a team from the Police Intervention Unit (PIU), he received a telephone call whilst he and his team were around Kotu, that a robbery case had been lodged at the Kanifing station. He added that he and his team then rushed back to Kanifing.

He further told the court that upon his arrived at the station, he found one Ba Saikou Suwadu, who had lodged a complain that he had been robbed by two young boys who had taken away from him the sum of D1,000 and a mobile phone.

Detective Danso further revealed that the 1st accused was arrested following the complaint and in the course of their investigations, they were also able to apprehend his co-accused.

He said the first accused was arrested at a ‘ghetto’, and was searched but they only discovered D100 in his pocket. The 2nd accused, he added, was arrested the following day with the Sony Ericcsson mobile phone and D5 notes in his pocket.

According to the police detective, both accused persons admitted committing the act at the police station. He said statements were obtained from them.
At that juncture, the prosecutor, sub-Inspector Fadera applied for an adjournment in order to have ample time to call more witnesses.

The case continues on October, 20th.

In another development, one Alhagie Momodou Bah was also arraigned before Senior Magistrate Abdoulie Mbacke, charged for stealing a mobile phone value at D2,500.

When the charge sheet was read to him, he pleaded guilty.

At that juncture, the presiding magistrate adjourned the case for judgement, but at the time of going to press, the accused was said to have been taken back for detention.
