Thursday, February 7, 2008

Kuntaur Lower and Upper Basic School recently received donated teaching and learning materials from their friends in Denmark, Holisingore Little School. The donated items include home science equipment such as metal and woodwork tools, sports gear, sewing machines, writing materials, stationary, paints and prayer mats. In total the donated items are worth in excess of D180,000.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at the school, Mr. Kanimang Camara, the link coordinator, said the link is 11 years old and was initiated by his brother Mamodou Camara. According to Mr. Camara the major objective of the link is to create awareness and exchange traditions and cultures between the two schools.

Highlighting some of the achievements realised by the link he said the link was able to raise standards in the technical department. He also spoke of the benefits to the wider community which have come as a result of the link namely the provision of a basketball court, support for Kuntaur Health Centre in the form of medical supplies and the provision of second hand clothes to be given out in the community.

All these achievements were brought about by Holisingore Little School and Gambia Vena in Denmark. Mr. Camara further urged the beneficiaries to make the best use of the donated items as they would help the students with their exam preparations.

For his part, the Director of the Regional Education Office R5, Mr. Baboucarr Suwareh, spoke at length on the importance of education, adding that previously an education was difficult to gain when there were very few schools. This meant, he said, that in some cases children had to walk up to 10km to seek education. He thanked the President for building schools everywhere in the country and urged parents and guardians to send their children to school.

He also thanked and commended Gambia Vena and Holisingore Little School for their laudable gesture.

Mr. Ebrima Jatta, the Principal of Kuntaur Upper Basic School, said Holisingore Little School and Gambia Vena have been very helpful in the past few years, adding that the link has sponsored science, woodwork and metalwork tools and equipment for the school.

Mr. Jatta further thanked the donors for their untiring efforts towards improving education in his school and assured them that the donated materials will be put to very good use.

Among other speakers at the event included Mr. Per Nygaarel the Head Teacher at Hilisingore Little School and Banna Sillah a PTA member who spoke on the importance of education.
