The community of Kerr Sait Maram and it’s catchment area inaugurated the new staff quarters, school library, school kitchen and toilets on Thursday 14th February.
The inauguration, which coincided with a visit from their friends in Emley Castle School, the UK, was a cultural display led by Taka Tity, “One Man Three Drums.”
In her remarks, the Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Tida Touray Leigh said the staff quarters were initiated by the community and sponsored by Action Aid The Gambia and Bespor. She added that the school kitchen and toilets were sponsored by Future In Our Hands (FIOH) and the library was funded by Ms. Ronnie Corwell, VSO volunteer known as Fatoumata Ceesay. Mrs. Leigh commended the sponsors, the Committee (PTA) Members and the community for their active participation in the school.
She assured the Emley Castle School that the learning materials they have donated will be put to good use.
For his part, Mr. Karamba Sonko representing the Director of Region Five hailed the sponsors for providing the structures which he said are very necessary. He stressed the need for teachers to have housing and other such amenities. “Today marks another important turning point in the history of the school.” He said adding, “This coincidence with the visitors from the UK coming is a chance to build more international links. This is all geared towards improving the education system.” Mr. Sonko said that the partnership is of paramount importance at an international level. That is why the VSO is doing her best to link all her clusters to her friends in England. He finished by urging the Head Mistress and senior teachers to observe all proceedings (for when Fatoumata Ceesay is gone) for sustainability.
Ms. Sud, the head of the delegation from the Emley Castle School, thanked the community and staff of Kerr Sait Maram Lower Basic School (LBS) for their warm welcome adding that the people of The Gambia are so friendly. According to her the link is young but hopefully it will last long in the interests of both parties. She also urged them to make best use of the donated materials.
Among other speakers included the Alkalo Imam, PTA members, Mrs. Fatoumata Ceesay, VSO and the Vice-Chairman of Kuntam Area Council.
Mr. Ebrima M. Ceesay who chaired the occasion gave thanks to all.
