The President of The Republic of The Gambia, H.E.Alhaji Yahya AJJ Jammeh, has won the highest individual sponsor of Gambian sports of the 2007 National Sports Journalists Awards held at the Kairaba Beach Hotel on 26 December.
He earned the award on account of his tireless support and vision for the development of sports in The Gambia.
President Jammeh in 2004 staged an U-17 football peace tournament which set the stage for the country’s preparation for the CAF U-17 championship, which as will be recalled was hosted and won by The Gambia.
In 2005, he ferried fans including journalists to Peru. Again in 2007 he assured the participation of fans at the Congo games as part of his support to the national teams’ success.
Being a president that has sports at heart, President Jammeh stormed May Day sports organised by the Gambia National Olympic Committee and added more light to the event which is dedicated to all workers in the country.
He has always asserted that “What sports has achieved for the country, diplomacy could not have done.”
