Muhammed Yahya Jammeh Cup: Banjul stumble to final

Banjul beat Gunjur to reach the final of the Muhammed Yahya Jammeh Zonal Championship on Saturday.

The two sides played a goalless draw in the regulation before last year’s runners-up, Banjul, grasped the final ticket after a 3-2 score in post-match penalties. The Gunjur team were unarguably the better side in a match that was punctuated by fascinating techniques from the Western Region boys.

After a relatively balanced first half encounter, Gunjur came out stronger in the second half launching a series of attacks on the Banjul defence. In the 55th minute, the City Boys survived a real scare when star player, Lamin Darboe, pierced through their porous defence to set up forward pair Yusupah Barrow who astonishingly watched his unweighted kick cleared.

Five minutes later, the Gunjur side could have broken the deadlock again if not for some poor finishing, with Banjul’s best chance coming in the 73rd minute through substitute Sarjo Janko whose rocket shot was cleared by the Gunjur keeper who was hardly pressurised by the Ousman Jagne-led Banjul forward.

After a stalemate score in full time, referee Mawdou Jallow introduced  post match spot kicks to decide the winner, where Gunjur were made to regret their missed chances as Banjul strolled to a surprise 3-2 win to reach their second final in two years.
