The US Ambassador to The Gambia, H.E. Joseph D. Stafford, has commended the Director and the staff of the Gambia Home for Children with Learning Difficulties (GHFCWLD), a charitable organisation, for their effort in training and caring for such children in The Gambia.
Ambassador Stafford expressed his commendation for the Home’s director on Monday at the dedication of the rehabilitated centre sponsored by the US Embassy. The occasion took place at the center in Sinchu Alhagie village in Kombo North, Western Region.
The embassy also donated furniture, gas cooker and other equipment to the center.
The project is said to be part of the ongoing efforts by the U.S Embassy to foster cooperation and understanding between Gambians and Americans.
The Ambassador and his team were taken on a conducted tour of the facility.
While congratulating them for what he referred to as a noble mission, the US Ambassador expressed his appreciation with the management of the Home for sustaining the centre, albeit difficult condition.
Mr. Geoffrey Hunwhicks, founder and managing director of the Home, said the centre takes care of children with learning difficulties between the ages of five and 15.
He thanked the U.S Embassy in Banjul for their intervention.
In her remarks on the occasion, Mrs. Rohey Hunwicks, wife of Mr Hunwicks, said her husband sold his house in the UK to set up the centre in The Gambia.
She added that there was a time her husband was discouraged about the project but she and the chairman of the Brikama Area Council, encouraged him to keep it up.
She appealed to other institutions in the country and Gambians in particular to support the Home.
Mr. Ousman Gaye, Chairman of the Brikama Area Council, also thanked the director of the centre for his sacrifice and dedication in making sure that the centre is operational.
He also lamented the lack of electricity and water at the centre and called on the intervention of the relevant authorities.
