Youth in Conflict With Law for Raising Funds for IGP

africa » gambia » tallinding
Monday, July 23, 2007

Sadibou Keita, who was early this month arrested by the police in Tallinding for going round town to raise money on behalf of the IGP, would know his fate next week.

Sadibou was apprehended on 5 July of this year with a document, bearing the letterhead of the Gambia Police Force titled: Donation! Donation! Donation!

The document indicated that the Inspector General of Police had mandated Keita to help in raising funds to support the ongoing battle against armed robbery.

According to the document, armed robbery cases are on the increase in the country and in most cases, victims are subjected to violent attacks.

But Keita ran out of luck in his fund-raising activity when he encountered the Alkalo of Tallinding and two men who grew suspicious and then reported the matter to Tallinding Police Station. The police immediately acted on the tip-off and effected his arrest to prepare the ground for his subsequent court appearance.

When the facts of the matter was related to Keita, he pleaded guilty to the charges preferred against him but pleaded with the magistrate to show him clemency as he was a married man with three children. He told the court that he was involved in the act because he wanted to raise money to pay KMC so the council would not evict him from his house.

However, the case was adjourned to July, 25 for conviction and the verdict would be handed down by magistrate B.O. Jobe of the Bundung Magistrates’ Court.
