Ghana 2008 Nation’s Cup qualifier Scorpions suffer setback

Visiting Syli Nationale of Guinea beat Gambia Scorpions 2-0 in their 2008 Nation’s Cup qualifiers match played at the Independence Stadium on Saturday.

Goals from French based players-Kaba Diawara and Pascal Feindouno in the second interval were enough for Guinea to climb to second spot in Group 8 on 4 points. Algeria increased their lead in the Group with an emphatic a 2-0 win over Cape Verde on the same day in Algiers.

Saturday’s setback which was Scorpions’ first home defeat in ten years has admittedly narrowed their chance of qualifying for the first-ever African Nation’s Cup finals in Ghana in 2008.

The Scorpions put up a promising start in the first interval with their best chance coming in the 30th minutes when courageous Njogu Demba made a valiant run into the Guinean territory. Both Kaba Diawara and Foday Mansary of Guinea also tried their luck before their shots went off target in the first half.

Fresh from break, Kaba Diawara opened scoring with a brilliant nod from Pascal Feindouno’s free-kick in the 51th minute. Moments later, Seyfo Soley was closed to an equaliser as his header past inches from the woodwork.

The introduction of Assan Jatta, Azziz Corr Nyan and Kamal Ndow at the expense of midfielder Mustapha Jarju and defender Mathieu Mendy and Dawda Bah was greeted with another goal from Guinea in the 70th minute when Pascal Feindouno capitalised on Seyfo Soley’s weak defence to slot in the second. Guinea continues to enjoy every torch of the ball as Scorpions struggled for a late come.

The home fans reacted to what they perceived as a drop point by throwing stones at the Scorpions as they drove off to their Paradise Suites camp. Scorpions’ next fixture will see them travel to Guinea in June 2, 2007, while Cape Verde hosts Algeria in the same weekend.
