Allasan David Cham, Chief of Nianija District in Central River Region north, has warned the people of Nianija against cattle rustling, saying the crime is a growing phenomenon in the area.
Chief Cham gave this warning in an exclusive interview with the Daily Observer.
He threatened to apprehend any one found wanting in the practice. He disclosed that the communities of Lower and Upper Saloum have intercepted some men with stolen animals, including sheep and goats around the border villages of Jimbala and Simbara.
According to him, most of these cases happen in villages around the border, where criminals easily seek refuge in Senegal.
Chief Cham commended the securities, especially those posted at Njau Police Station, for their gallant efforts in combating the menace of cattle rustling in the area. He called on the people of Nianija to complement the efforts of the police and provide them with the necessary tip off.
He then urged residents to do away with illegal practices, as he would not hesitate to enforce law and order on anyone found culpable. “I will not compromise with anybody who jeopardises life and property in this area,” he concluded.
