Sierra Leoneans Face Crucial Re-Run

Friday, September 07, 2007

The Sierra Leone elections that were praised by internal and external observers recently are to face a crucial run-off tomorrow.

The election is set between APC (All People’s Congress) headed by Ernest Bai Koroma and Solomon Berewa, Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP). Already the re-run campaign was marred by sporadic violence blamed either on APC militants or SLPP militants. Both parties blame the other for igniting problems.

In Segbwema in the east Charges Margai the failed PMDC candidate and a disgruntled SLPP who pledged his loyalty to the APC, were prevented from entering the town. Clashes broke out and SLPP office was burnt there. Junior Gbao, the accused, took to his heels and is said to be on the run. It could nearly be stopped until President Kabba suggested a state of emergency if problems persisted.

To further strengthen the peace, the president, Kabba called Ernest Bai Koroma and Solomon E. Berewa warning them to keep the peace. They recited their country’s pledge together and vowed to keep the peace.

A peace march was scheduled for 5th September but before the March Ernest Bai Koroma of the APC refused to join the peace-March. As a result, Solomon E Berewa of the SLPP says, “If he refused to join in the March, then there is no need for me to go and join the peace march.” The two candidates could not march to assure their support for a peaceful election.

Observers have been deployed ahead of time and the security too is on the alert to club out any breach of the law.
