Sainey Touray Wins Golden Boot

The Gambia U-17 team has proved all predictions wrong by clinch the Ivorian four-nation Football tournament, staged by the Ivorian Football Federation to mark the 47th Anniversary of nationhood.

The Darling Scorpions defeated Burkina Faso 1-0 in a final played at the Robert Champeaux Stadium in Abidjan.

Sainey Touray alias Ballack scored the only goal of the final in the 23rd minute, his third in the tournament.

Over 20,000 spectators including the Ivorian Head of State, Laurent Gbagbo, Ministers and senior government officials witnessed the final.

Gambia U-17, which came out unbeaten in the tournament, were awarded a giant trophy and twenty five gold medals, Burkina Faso went home with 25 silver medals and Niger received 25 Bronze medals.

Meanwhile Sainey Touray alias Ballack of Wallidan was awarded the Golden Boot of the tournament for scoring three goals in four matches.

It could be recalled that the Egyptian Technical Assistant Tarik Siagy coaches the Gambian team to Abidjan and assisted by Ebrima Jallow alias EB, former Bakau United and Seaview coach.

The delegation to Abidjan was led by Joseph Sambou alias Joe, executive member of GFA and second vice president of Serekunda East Sport Development Organisation.

Meanwhile Pointsport has learned that each team in the tournament was compensated 3 million CFA Francs equivalent to D150, 000.00 (One Hundred and Fifty Thousands Dalasis) by Ivorian president.

The team was expected back last night.

This second time The Gambia won a peace tournament away from home shores.

The first was in November 2004 when Coach Fred Osam Dudou led the former U-17 to clinch the Tunisian peace tournament.
