Sierra Leone HC Advises SLPP Gambia Branch

Thursday, November 9, 2006
The Gambia branch of the Sierra Leone Peoples’ Party (SLPP) was recently addressed at their maiden party meeting by the Sierra Leone High Commissioner to The Gambia.

The occasion, which brought together staunch supporters of the Sierra Leone ruling party, was held at the St. Theresa’s Lower Basic School in Kanifing.

His Excellency Foday Yum Kella praised the chairman of the branch, David Biandoma, for his love, steadfastness and unwavering support over the years for the SLPP.

“If you cut me, there will be red blood but will clot and have SLPP spelt in it,” HC Yum Kella told members of the branch.

He added that he is an ambassador not only for SLPP members, but for all Sierra Leoneans in The Gambia.

His Excellency said he felt proud that the party branch could do without him.

“If your branch is recognized, you have a saying in the party’s convention, every branch has a saying,” he said.

“Once recognized as a branch you have the chance for selection. You would have had the mandate, but you are not a branch yet until some criteria are met, according to the constitution.”

The HC advised members of the new branch to suspend launching the branch till all the necessary party conditions are met.

“If party members come here in November, will they see us as a branch?,” he queried, calling on members to satisfy the conditions before launching the branch.

“We should ask ourselves: ‘What have I done in the SLPP as a person?’. On my part, no position is big for me in the party, because I have done a lot for my party. There is no door I can knock that cannot be opened; I know I am committed,” he remarked.

HC Yum Kella intimated that “SLPP is the only government” that could provide sound leadership for Sierra Leone.

“It is a suckling mother’s party (Combra party). What we have achieved some bad characters cannot see. We shall give the party to them after thirty to forty years if they are matured,” he added.

The worse thing that happened to Sierra Leone was Johnny Paul’s 9 months of misrule in 1997, the High Commissioner noted.
