8,000 cashew plants destroyed

Wednesday, December 6, 2006
Karamo Barrow, a Gambian based in Hamburg, Germany who is currently on holidays has disclosed to the Daily Observer the loss of about 8,000 cashew plants.

The tragic event occurred last Saturday December 2, 2006 in his home garden plantation in Jah Kunda village, Wuli West, URR.

Speaking on the sad episode, he alleged that people from the neighbouring villages of Sara Hamadi and Sara Nyaba had stormed his cashew plantation and destroyed all his valuable plants.
Mr Barrow added that the land he had cleared belonged to his family and had hitherto been an uncultivated forest for centuries but upon his clearance and cultivation of the said land, people from Sara Hamadi and Sara Nyaba came out to claim ownership of the place.
He additionally claimed that 3,500 of his garden plants were in 2005 uprooted by an unidentified person. This situation finally culminated in the destruction of the 8,000 cashew plants last Saturday.

Mr Barrow then pointed out Bacara Bah, Alkalo of Sara Hamadi as well as Ebrima Bah and Cow Sarjo Bah, both of them brothers of the Alkalo as being responsible for this year’s destruction.

IKaramao Barrow finally appealed to President Yahya Jammeh and his government to come to his aid in order to tackle this matter.

Others concerned people including Alagie Kemo Barrow, Karamo Barrow’s, expressed shock and disappointment over the destruction, describing it as unfortunate and big loss.

Considering the nature of the plants in the garden and their number, they called for efforts to find an immediate solution to the problem.
