Kemo Cham, president of the University of The Gambia Student Union, on Thursday, tendered his resignation letter to the Executive Committee of the student body. His resignation comes barely one month before the end of his tenure as president of the union.
According to reports, Cham’s resignation was mainly as a result of what he termed as the formal implantation of an undermining force within the executive student body.
Having spearheaded students’ affair since January 2007, Cham stated: “When I first conceived the idea of serving the students in this capacity, I had braced myself for all the challenges ahead”.
His letter went on to declare that in the course of serving the general student body, “I earned myself an almost equal number of friends and foes. This was not at all a surprise as the situation is such that our fraternity is a composition of people of various extreme in terms of agenda”.
The letter also revealed that his decision was in connection with a UTGSU congress, which took place on Wednesday 14, November, 2007, in which a proposal he had put forward was overturned.
When contacted to throw further light on the issue, Cham declined to comment but referred this reporter to the UTGSU secretariat at the UTG Faculty Office Building, where a copy of his resignation letter was obtained.
Mustapha Kah, the erstwhile vice-president of the union has stepped in as the caretaker president, according to reliable sources.
Approached for his comments, Mr Kah expressed sadness over his former boss’ resignation, describing him as a hardworking and dedicated unionist who had given the students his all. He revealed that the Executive Committee would be meeting today to discuss the issue and that a congress would be convened as soon as possible.
